Black Dental Floss

— Aeolian instrument

2023 — wait and hear group, initiated by Till Bovermann and Bart HM Vandeput

Black dental floss is spun into a tree or similar structure. Any vibration within the floss, whether caused by the wind, the tree or the people interacting with it, is picked up by contact microphones attached to one or more individual threads. These vibrations are amplified and made audible through headphones on the installation itself and through a loudspeaker in a nearby place where people gather and interact with each other.

Black dental floss, Aeolian instrument is a metaphor for the complexity of the relationships we often experience. The entanglement between the branches of the host, the floss, the wind and the people interacting with the device represents an artificial rhizome that is constantly changing and evolving.
